Porcelain vessel with leather and brass mounting hardware. This rare Civil War-era canteen features white glazed porcelain construction with hand-painted Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) insignia in gold, red, and blue. The central medallion displays the distinctive GAR star emblem with American flag shield, eagle finial, and decorative gold initials "G.A.R." flanked by ornamental gold scrollwork.
The canteen features white porcelain mounting lugs for the carrying strap and brass stopper cap secured by period chain. Distinctive disc-shaped design with slightly convex sides and narrow spout neck typical of officer's presentation canteens from this period. The replacement leather shoulder strap features brass hardware with adjustment buckles and ring attachment.
Condition Notes: Original porcelain body intact with fine crazing consistent with age. No chips, cracks or repairs to porcelain vessel. Surface soiling and minor wear to painted decoration. Leather strap is a period-appropriate replacement. Brass hardware displays light oxidation. Brass stopper may be a replacement but is consistent with period design. Chain intact but shows patina.
