Description

Impressive Red Wing Union Stoneware Co. 20-gallon salt-glazed stoneware crock with cobalt blue numeral decoration and distinctive spread-wing eagle motif. This large-capacity Minnesota-made storage vessel features original metal tension bands and authentic period markings.

Salt-glazed stoneware in classic off-white/cream coloration with bold cobalt blue hand-decorated "20" numeral indicating gallon capacity. The vessel features a distinctive spread-wing eagle motif in rust-colored slip, characteristic of Red Wing decorative techniques from the early 20th century. The crock bears the manufacturer's oval stamp reading "RED WING UNION STONEWARE CO. RED WING, MINN." prominently displayed beneath the eagle decoration.

Metal tension bands with locking mechanism have been added to reinforce and stabilize substantial structural cracks that developed with age and use. The crock retains its original rolled rim and cylindrical form with straight sides, representing classic American utilitarian pottery design from the Red Wing Union Stoneware period (1894-1936).
