Hand-stitched cotton quilt featuring classic log cabin pattern with 56 blocks arranged in an 8 × 7 grid in a Sunshine and Shadows arrangement. Each block showcases concentric squares of variegated fabrics including plaids, paisleys, stripes, florals, and solid colors in a rich palette of reds, blues, greens, purples, and earth tones typical of the Victorian era. Notable for its inclusion of wool challis and delaines worked into the patches - essentially "a fabric library for the period!"
Provenance
American, likely from the Northeastern or Mid-Atlantic region, dating to circa 1860-1880 based on fabric types, pattern composition, and construction techniques. The log cabin pattern became particularly popular following the Civil War period and represents one of the most iconic American quilt designs of the late 19th century.
